mela chichedda

mela chichedda

"Mela chichedda" is still cultivated in the province of Avellino, in the Upper Cadore Valley and in Ofanto. It's a variety that matures in autumn although it keeps well until winter thanks to its conservability. Its fruits are rather small and round, yellow-green with red areas, the pulp is white and it has a crunchy consistency; the flavour is sweeter although when it has just been picked it has a slightly sour aftertaste that fades as it reached full ripeness. As other varieties of local apple trees, it has been gradually substituted by other non-local cultivars.
